What to do in Copenhagen?
I am from Copenhagen and have lived here most of my adult life. So I have my favourite haunts and places I love to spend time. Here I will share my recommendations for what to do in my town. It’ll take a while for it to be complete, so bear with me.
A couple of hours in Copenhagen
A stroll and a cup of coffee with a view
Cafe Europa is a good place for a view of Strøget. From the Airport take metro from Airport to Kongens Nytorv and walk to cafe and then take metro to airport from . For this you will need about 3 hours, if you just want a walk through town, it can be done in 1 1/2 – 2 hours and will take you past many of main sights of central Copenhagen (Borgen, Nyhavn, Børsen and Christianshavn)
One museum – to rule them all
Take the train to Københavns Hovedbanegård and walk down to Glyptoteket and have a look around their wonderful collections of French impressionsts, Greek, Roman and Egyptian artifacts, mummies and more. It is also a wonderful building and there is a great little cafee in the wintergarden.
A day in Copenhagen
Start with a cup of coffee and perhaps a bite to eat in your neighbourhood. Then go for a walk to explore. If you feel like it there are a good few museums where you can visit for a bit of culture on your day in Copenhagen.
Nørrebro – cafees on Blågårdsgade or on Jægersborggade (kaffekollektivet),
Walk down blågårdsgade and then down towards Assistenskirkegården – the cemetary / park in the centre of Nørrebro. You will find famous dead Danes and alive Danes sunning themselves, walking with their kids, dogs or new love. Walk down to Jægersborggade and the new park / cyclehighway, go down to the Red strip newly developed by Superflex.
Vesterbro – Risteriet (great coffee and friendly service) just off Halmtorvet by the roundabout, Kaffe (small and cosy) på Istedgade, Kaffeplantagen (friendly and roomy) or Enghave Kaffe (hipster) på Enghaveplads, Bang&Jensen (a classic, now a bit run-down but has the best food of these) på Istedgade.
Stroll down Istedgade to explore the small designshops selling household stuff and clothes, and have a look down the streets between Istedgade and Vesterbrogade. End up on Vesterbrogade and consider having a look in to the City museum before leaving the neighbourhood.
Indre By (centre of town) – Cafe Din Nye Ven (a livingroom in the centre of town with good coffee and friendly service) on St. Pedersstræde, Risteriet (just great coffee and coffee gadgets) on Studiestræde, Cafe Europa (classic cafe at a great location, opens early but is pricy) on Amagertorv.
Walk around the centre of town, avoid the pedestrian street Strøget with its crowds and large brand names, but explore the streets around. The neighbourhood around Christiansborg is charming with beautiful buildings and quiet streets. Visit Glyptoteket (see above) free on Sundays or National Museet.
Another walk is towards Rosenborg and its surrounding park. Davids Samling is a wonderful collection of oriental art.
Østerbro –
Take a walk around Kastellet and pass by the Little Mermaid before you walk along the harbour into centre of town via Nyhavn.
